A thrilling re-imagination of Arthurian legends, Sword of Ages Book 1: Avalon (IDW Publishing) delivers epic sweeping action, nonstop adventure, and uncanny visuals to behold. As an origin story, Sword of Ages has created a marvelous world with interesting characters to root for..

Join Avalon as she becomes the first warrior to wield the most famous and sacred weapon of all time! Follow this young champion as she fights for her world’s survival, inspiring a legion of heroes to join her struggle against a ruthless alien force. The line between science and magic might blur, but the line between heroes and villains will be drawn in blood!

Here are 5 reasons why you should pick up Sword of Ages Book 1: Avalon:

5) The Writing!

Writer/artist Gabriel Rodriguez introduces readers to young warrior known as Avalon, who is sent on a quest to find the Lady of the Lake and retrieve the Sacred Sword. Not only is this a coming-of-age tale from Avalon’s perspective, the narrative heavily focuses on its word-building. Letterer Robbie Robbins emphasizes the dialect as each alien tribe has its own language.

4) The Art!

Also on artist duties,  Gabriel Rodriguez illustrates all of the action, delivering these gorgeous panels of his characters in battle. In one of the standout images, Avalon is riding into battle, with her sword in hand, on top of a giant saber-toothed tiger. Notice how there is so much detail in the character design, especially in the sleek armor of the Black Knight.

3) The Colors!

Colorist Lovern Kindzierski has a vivid palette, making each planet feel special on its own. You have desert landscapes, where the sun refuses to set. Then you have the white walls of the temple in Caledia. If you notice, the red tones of Lord Morgan’s costume brightens each page.

2) Bonus Material!

The bonus pages include an intro by Locke & Key co-creator Joe Hill, an interview with Rodriguez, black and white sketches, and an in-depth look at the architectural design of the buildings. All of this is really gearing me up for the return of Sword of Ages

1) A Fantastic Read!

An epic sci-fi fantasy breakthrough, readers will absolutely love every single page of Sword of Ages Book 1: Avalon/ So far, I’ve loved every issue of the Sword of Ages series!
