Battlepug #1, Images Comics

An entertaining spell of fantasy, political satire, and adventure, Battlepug #1 (Image Comics) delivers the swordplay, canine cuteness, and muscle action! The award-winning webcomic, about a lonely man and his faithful companion, continues in all-new fresh installment.

It’s been a few years since The Last Kinmundian saved the world with the help of his faithful Battlepug, but a new threat arises. The epic tale returns as our favorite barbarian and his trusty overgrown dog renew their quest for insane adventure!

Here are 5 reasons why you should read Battlepug #1:

5) The Compugdium!

The first issue takes place after the mythological events of Battlepug: The Compugdium. The collection serves as an origin story, a prequel to the first installment.

4) The Writing!

Writer Mike Norton enjoys levels of self-parody, spoofing the Conan the Barbarian and Red Sonja movies, and mocking the current presidency in laugh-loud-loud commentary. Raising the stakes, the Last Kinmundian has a lot to lose now that he has a family to call his own. Letterer Crank bolds certain words to emphasize exaggeration and heighten the emotional stakes.

3) The Artwork!

Norton is great at word-building as the Last Kinmundian and his tribe continue on their nomadic adventures. In her closeups, Moll expresses so much tenderness and care when she looks at her traveling companion. My favorite action sequence takes place when the Kinmundian tackles a giant bear with a hook for a hand.

2) The Colors!

Colorist Allen Passalaqua is able to turn the pages turn bright red when the Kinmundian swings his sword around. Notice how the luscious backgrounds are bright in green and yellowish tones. Moll’s wardrobe stands out because it is the only thing blue on the page.

1) A Fun Adventure!

You don’t have to love dogs to fully enjoy Battlepug #1, but you’ll definitely want one of your own after finishing up the first issue. Kicking off to a great start, I can’t wait to see what lies ahead for the Battlepug series.

Battlepug #1 arrives in stores on September 3rd, 2019.
