Dragons Painscape #1, IDW

Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons: Chapter II: Painscape #1 (IDW Publishing/Oni Press)is a maniacal crossover with incredibly wild and crazy ideas. If you love the cartoon and if you love over-the-top comedy, this comic book is definitely geared for you!

Once upon a game, Rick, Morty, and the Smith family went on magical D&D adventures…now, magical D&D adventures are coming to Earth, and no one will survive the Painscape!

Here are 5 reasons why you should read Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons: Chapter II: Painscape #1:

5) Two Worlds Collide!

It’s Rick and Morty! They’re inside a fantasy tabletop role-playing game! Just the idea of it; it’s bananas! Bananas!

4) The Writing!

You wouldn’t think this type of crossover would need a plot but there is! Writer Jim Zub really lets the banter fly between Morty and his dysfunctional family in the opening pages. Zub kickstarts the narrative right away as Rick Sanchez explains what his campaign setting is. I laugh out loud at how the lettering by Crank! and Troy Little Xs out Morty’s curse words.

3) The Artwork!

Artist Troy Little has done a fantastic job recreating the character designs from the popular cartoon. Morty’s over-the-top facial expressions are priceless in an extreme closeup. Twisting the medieval time period, Little illustrates a striking wardrobe made up of a thousand eyes.

2) The Colors!

The primary color palette by Leonardo Ito is incredibly eye-popping. From the green portals to the Morty’s yellow shirt, the pages are so vivid that you will not be able to look away. Even when Morty laughs, the words are colored in with such brightness.

1) A Fun Read!

Fueled by absurdities and hilarious visual gags, Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons: Chapter II: Painscape #1 lands its wisecracks with ease. I really want to see how the second issue tops the first issue.
