Barrier #4, Image Comics

An unapologetically sociopolitical sci-fi thriller, Barrier #4 (Image Comics) focuses on its hotblooded and harrowing fight for survival. After debuting on PanelSyndicate.com, the popular webcomic by Brian K. Vaughan, Muntsa Vicente, and Marcos Martin is being published in a must-have limited print run!

Barrier dives into violence, language, and illegal immigration…with a shocking sci-fi twist. They don’t understand a single word the other is saying. Oscar and Liddy must learn to communicate if they stand any chance of surviving their otherworldly captors.

5) What Happened Before…

Just when Liddy had Oscar cornered, she was about to pull the trigger and blast away. The standoff was interrupted by the glowing fire up in the sky. An alien spaceship kidnapped them and has been holding them hostage.

4) The Social Commentary!

Writer Brian K. Vaughan highlights the theme of language with his two protagonists. Liddy only speaks English and Oscar can only talk to her in his native Spanish tongue. Even with the thought-provoking dialogue, Vaughn manages to ease the tension with his excellent comedic timing.

3) The Experimental Artwork!

This installment is also printed in its original “landscape” format, which means it has been side-stapled for convenient viewing. Your eyes will be captivated by Muntsa Vicente’s surreal alien species. The creature designs may remind readers of War of the Worlds, but these aliens are more fluid in nature.

2)The Colors!

Outer-space is a beautiful rainbow in Marcos Martin’s vivid palette. Notice when the alien kidnappers speak, their wordless balloons are primarily yellow or blue.

1) An Excellent Read!

Overall an excellent read, Barrier #4 continues to bring together pop culture and politics in a clever sci-fi thriller! I can’t wait to read the fifth and final issue!
